Counseling Services

ABOUT ME

I am a licensed professional clinical counselor who specializes in children, adolescents and families. I also work with the adult population and enjoy doing so very much. I work in a private practice setting with a colleague who’s primary focus is adults and she also specializes in substance use.  The two of us combined make a great team and are able to collaborate to meet all of your treatment needs.

My philosophy of care is to approach and interact with my clients from an open non-judgmental perspective which allows me to treat the person as a whole.  I incorporate a wellness approach to my counseling which I have found to be the most holistic and effective.  I am fortunate enough to work in an area with outstanding community partners who allow me to make referrals knowing my client’s will receive the highest quality of care! Here, we like knowing that whether it’s chiropractic care you need, fitness, family medicine or legal consultation, you will be referred to a well trusted and cooperative establishment.   I have listed below some of the parental concerns I have treated thus far in my career. These are also typical concerns or diagnoses that I work with in my practice.

THERAPY PROCESS
The first step in healing or overcoming obstacles in your life is making that first contact. At the first point of contact we will briefly discuss the concern that has led you to inquire about the therapy process.  You will then be sent a packet of information to fill out before coming in to your first session.  Having this information completed makes your first session much more productive.
In your first session you will review the necessary paperwork and be given the opportunity to ask any questions.  If you are an insurance client the counselor will administer a diagnostic assessment to gain insight into your treatment needs. From the results of that assessment, you along with your counselor will decide upon goals that you would like to achieve in therapy.
All of my therapeutic interventions are evidenced based and proved to work.  My goal is to teach the parents the interventions and modify some parenting patterns that can make their therapy experience as brief and productive as possible.  When working with your child I provide updates each session as well as any observations and/or feedback on your child’s response to my interventions.  I work with parents to modify parenting, troubleshoot behaviors and develop behavior plans targeted specifically for your family.  We will monitor progress through the sessions and make changes when necessary.
Children’s sessions are typically different from adults in that the counselor will need to spend time with the parent gathering information just as she would the Client.  Some activities that are often used with children in therapy are as follows:
  • Expressive Arts Therapy
  • Play Therapy (sandtray & miniatures)
  • Hands-on creativity based activities
  • Feeling identification exercises
  • Sensory integration interventions
  • Music-based coping skills and interventions
  • Physically active interventions (for children who have excessive amounts of energy)
  • Traditional talk therapy when led by client
  • Token Economies & Behavioral Modification Plans

Parents are always welcomed and encouraged to discuss the child’s session afterwards.  Each child will receive a welcome bag with “goodies” from the counselor after their initial session.

INSURANCE

We take MOST insurances at this time and working towards accepting all insurances.  If we do not take your insurance we can sometimes work with your insurance company to allow an individual case agreement.  One service that so often goes underutilized is EAP benefits.  I would encourage you to check with your employer to see if they offer free counseling sessions with us through their EAP program. If you do not have insurance or choose not to pay with insurance we accept private pay as well and offer discounted rates when you purchase sessions in advance.

WHAT’S NEXT?

If you have any questions please feel free to contact us and we can answer any of your questions.  If you are unsure as to whether or not your child needs the consistency of regular sessions, contact us and we can discuss whether a one session consultation might be a better option.
